Antimicrobial resistance is one of the major challenges of public health worldwide with its impact on increasing morbidity, mortality and costs. Inappropriate and irrational use of antimicrobials is the most important cause of emerging resistant microorganisms, their spread and persistence in the community and hospitals. Antibiotic use in people, animals or plants can promote the development and spread of antibiotic resistance−which has no ecological, sectoral or geographical borders. It is a concern for all: national authorities, physicians, pharmacists, the pharmaceutical industry, researchers, veterinarians, farmers and a wide range of consumers among population, with children as the predominant group. All have a role to play in developing an effective response.
